- Abstract
The goal of this workshop is to discuss various topics regarding the offline & alternate versions of WikiMedia Wiki content. The current offline & alternate versions, issues, processes, best practices, issues, and Q&A session will be part of this workshop.
Currently, at least the following offline & alternate versions are available for the WikiMedia Wiki content:
- CD/DVD
- Pedia press & Create PDF (Wiki articles in PDF/Print format)
- Mobile Wiki
- Wiki reader
NOTE:
- By offline version I mean, CD/DVD, Pediapress & Create PDF (PDF and printed book), Wiki reader, and so on
- By alternate version I mean, Mobile wiki
Please let me know if you know any other Offline & alternate versions.
We will also discuss about the important points that needs to be taken care while developing solutions for the offline & alternate versions.
The English/Latin script centric approach of offline & alternate versions definitely needs to be changed. We will explore the possibility of achieving this goal with the help of different language communities. Many users working on wikis that use non-latin scripts, will share their experience regarding the current offline & alternate versions. The feedback from the people outside Wiki community about the current offline & alternate versions will also be shared.
Some of the points that can be discussed as part of this:
- Introduction to the available offline & alternate versions
- Comparison of the current tools
- How many wiki communities are aware about the current offline & alternate versions.
- How the current offline & alternate versions are received/used across the different language wiki communities?
- Improving the current processes involved in the creation of the offline & alternate versions.
- Finding better solutions for offline & alternate versions
- Developing solutions for automating the repetitive manual tasks, such as article selection and avoidance of vandalism.
- Rendering issues of non-Latin scripts for each offline & alternate version
- Overcoming the limitations of current CD/DVD format.
- Making the hardware manufacturers aware about the rendering issues in their devices.
- Involving the developers from non-Latin languages
- Usability of offline & alternate versions
- Special solutions for the third world countries
Emphasis will be more on the CD/DVD and PediaPress versions, since the wiki community has direct control over these solutions. The Mobile Wiki and Wiki reader solutions are largely depend on the device manufacturers. We can list the current status and submit a report to the device manufacturers.

- 80686 see also Submissions/Wikipedia Offline, the focus of that talk is about openZIM which provides high compression, fulltext search and fast random access to the compressed contents even on tiny devices, maybe we can stick the things together to a working toolchain - the idea of openZIM was to provide a standard for offline content to make it easier to publish offline and to avoid reinventing the wheel over and over again
