Abstract (please use no less than 300 words to describe your proposal): this presentation is aiming to give the audience an outline of Wikimedia movement in Japan, how Japanese speaking society (or shortly "Japan") encountered Wikimedia, what has been built in the interaction of Wikimedia culture and Japanese ones. Also how Japanese Wikimedians attempt to outreach, what other players are working with them, that will be briefly described.

The presentation will give first the basic information of the Japanese project: statistics and history of Wikimedia projects in Japanese language, mainly focusing on Wikipedia, along with the background knowledge of Japanese cultural and social context, as follows:

general phenomena and tendencies of Japanese society both on ground and on the Net.
other net collaboration examples and wiki usages in the Japanese speaking world, in particular.
how these cultural particularities of Japanese society and culture affect Japanese Wikimedia movement (even anecdotal); in other words, major characteristics of Japanese Wikipedia community.

As one of most popular websites in Japan, Japanese Wikipedia enjoys applauds and suffers criticism, so this presentation shows the audience its social circumstances broken down into several topics as follows:

brief history of coverage and mentions of the Japanese project.
what the Japanese society sees the Wikimedia project.
typical applauds, misunderstandings (even favorable) and criticism to Japanese Wikipedia.

Also the presentation shows recent outreach activities of Japanese Wikipedians, from last year in particular.

Andrew Lih pointed out in his Wikipedia book that for the other language speaking world Japanese Wikipedia was somehow mysterious. I expect this presentation can be an response to some extent.
